National Volunteer Week is our FAVOURITE time of year at the GTHS Animal Shelter as it allows us to celebrate our phenomenal Volunteer Team. To this end, for each day of National Volunteer Week we are featuring a GTHS Volunteer that has gone above and beyond for the animals in our programs. They are our SUPERSTARS!
GTHS Superstar: Mike S.
Position at the GTHS: Dog Care Volunteer and Dog Walker
Why Mike is a GTHS Star
Mike S. joined the GTHS in January 2013. He was recruited by GTHS Dog walkers as they would often pass him out on long walks on the Georgian Trail. Luckily for the GTHS, Mike agreed to attend a Volunteer Orientation!
From the beginning, it was evident that Mike had a special touch with dogs. His calm and patient personality helped our most challenging or anxious dogs learn to focus and develop a relationship.
Once an official volunteer, Mike dedicated himself to the dogs that needed him most. These included the high energy dogs that needed his leadership and direction. These dogs were often too difficult to handle by the majority of our dog walkers. Most importantly, Mike would provide these dogs with LONG, structured walks that gave them the energy release they required and the focus they craved.
Mike S. goes above and beyond for the GTHS Dogs. He volunteers twice daily at the shelter providing his ‘projects’ with long on-site walks or treating them to off-site hikes in the mountains or trips to his backyard. His dedication has increased the adoptability of dogs in our program giving them a greater opportunity for swiftly finding a forever home.
Thank you Mike for all you do for the GTHS Dogs!
