THE 2025 HOLIDAY CAMPAIGN
At the GTHS each day begins with small acts of care. A warm meal. A quiet place to rest. A volunteer offering gentle reassurance to a frightened pet. And each day brings moments that ask our community to help us care for those who need it most.
These moments are where every story of hope begins.
And they begin with you.

THE STORIES
CASHEW
Some days bring two lives at once - frightened, injured, and looking to us for help. Cashew and Peanut had been cared for by neighbours, surviving outdoors until two separate accidents left them both injured. When they arrived at the GTHS, they were gentle, affectionate, and desperate for comfort.
Peanut had begun to heal on his own, but Cashew required a full leg amputation to live pain-free.
Because of you, we had the supplies, the skilled veterinary support, and the time to help them heal, together.
And when they were ready, they were adopted side by side, never once having to face the world without the other.
WINTER
Some afternoons bring pets who arrive carrying not just one challenge, but many - pets like Winter.
He was the first dog to reach us from the Pikangikum wildfire transfers, flown south in search of safety and a chance at the care he urgently needed. Winter arrived with a damaged hip requiring major surgery and a positive heartworm test that meant months of careful treatment ahead.
But because of you, we were ready. Ready to say yes to complex cases, ready to lean on trusted medical partners, ready to make room for a dog whose journey had already been so hard.
Winter received surgery, medical care, and the compassion that carried him through every step.
DUCKIE
Duckie arrived with a serious obstruction, and her family were faced with care that was out of reach.
After surgery, she struggled with eating, requiring an IV and supportive care until she could rally.
Duckie is a sweet and affectionate cat, but some adopters were hesitant because of her needs.
Because of you, Duckie received surgery, round-the-clock support, and a training plan to set her up for success when she returned home.
Duckie’s previous family followed her journey. After noticing that her length of stay was increasing, they reached out. With support from their vet and the GTHS, Duckie returned home to her place in her family.
CHARLIE
Some shelter pets wait longer than others. They’re just as deserving, but the longer they remain in care, the wait becomes increasingly difficult.
Charlie has been with us since July, adopted once and returned soon after. Now the stress of shelter life is wearing on him. His anxious pacing. his difficult settling, his need for quiet and routine - all signs that he’s trying his best but struggling deeply. Because of you, we’re able to give Charlie the support he needs: medication to help him cope, enrichment to ease his stress, and now, a search for a calm, experienced foster home where he can finally exhale.
Charlie is a dog who loves deeply, feels deeply, and needs stability to thrive.
STORMFLY
Some pets need more than routine care. They need time, patience, enrichment, and treatment plans that shift and evolve.
Faced with a string of illness, Stormfly spent her first three months in quarantine. She was under-socialized, but when Stormfly joined our main room, she quickly came out of her shell, with the help of some confident cats who came alongside her.
Because of you, Stormfly received every test, every medication, every moment of enrichment that helped her heal both physically and emotionally. Her days became brighter. Her eyes clearer. Her playfulness returned.
And when she was finally ready, she found her home.
MYRNA
Some nights bring emergencies that can’t wait - and families who are terrified of losing the pet they love.
Myrna, a 13-year-old chihuahua, arrived with a life-threatening infection in her uterus. Her family had tried everything they could, but the cost of urgent surgery was simply out of reach. Losing her wasn’t an option - not emotionally, not mentally, not for the bond they shared.
Because of you, we were able to say yes. Myrna was able to have emergency overnight surgery, saving her life. Our staff provided ongoing care, updates, and reassurance to her family, who struggled deeply with her absence.
And when Myrna was finally strong enough, she went home. Healthy, safe, and right back where she belonged.
BAKER TOM
Some stories unfold slowly, shaped by patience, foster care, and second chances - like Baker Tom’s.
He arrived needing an eye enucleation and was infected with ringworm, a combination that meant his healing journey would take time. Lots of it.
Because of you, Baker Tom was able to settle into long-term foster care, where he received daily treatments, medication, and the safe space he needed to recover fully. In foster, he blossomed. Finally comfortable, finally playful, and finally able to heal without the stress of a shelter environment.
After weeks of care, his body healed. His spirit followed. And then, the day came when he went home for good.
LOCAL PUPPIES
Some weeks, it isn’t one story that stands out; it’s the growing number of tiny paws arriving at our doors.
Puppy litter intakes are arriving more frequently, and the moment they arrive, they need safety and care. These little ones are already depending on our team for everything, and on a community that believes every pet deserves a healthy start.
Because of you, we can meet today’s growing need while building a better tomorrow through accessible spay and neuter services. Behind every adorable face lies a bigger truth: without access, litters will continue to arrive, and more families will struggle to keep up.
While these little ones wait to begin their next chapter, you can ensure they get the care they need today, supporting our community into the future.
COLBY
Some pets need care that stretches far beyond the basics. Care that requires space, medication, vigilance, and patience.
Colby arrived as a stray and has been fighting chronic upper respiratory illness ever since. Testing confirmed feline herpes virus, which is highly infections and requires a long, steady course of antibiotic treatment.
Because of you, we’ve been able to isolate him safely, treat him consistently, and support him with the comfort and enrichment that keeps his stress low and his chances high. Recently moved to our front room, Colby is finally beginning to enjoy more space, more light, and more connection.
He will need a special home, one without other cats, and one willing to continue his treatment. But he deserves it. Deeply.
