Feature Volunteer: Rachel
POSITION AT THE GTHS
Rachel volunteers 6 days a week in the dog department, she has committed an incredible amount of time. Rachel is a steady, reliable team mate and a central part of what makes the dog department run so efficiently!
WHY DID YOU WANT TO VOLUNTEER AT GTHS
In September 2015 I was laid off from my job of 14 years and moved from Toronto to Collingwood. Although my employer gave me lots of warning, I still had no idea what I would do with myself once I got here. I had worked my entire adult life in the music business (both as a professional singer and administrator) and was concerned with having too much time on my hands.
WHY VOLUNTEERING IS IMPORTANT TO Rachel
I have always been interested in dog behavior (after experiencing problems with my own dogs), so I decided to look into volunteering at the GTHS in October 2015. From the get go, I loved it! The staff and volunteers so impressed me with their expertise and commitment to the welfare of the animals in their care. In the last 9 months of volunteering, I have spent many hours walking dogs, cleaning kennels and I also managed to foster two very interesting dogs. Every morning, come rain or come shine, I get myself to the GTHS to help out 6 days a week. In all of these months, there has never been a single day where I didn’t learn something new.
Thank-you to the GTHS and all of the animals who have literally changed my life for the better. I would like to continue to help out for as long as you’ll have me!
