Feature Volunteer: Lorry

Lorry is a Dog Adoption Counsellor and is also responsible for picking up items needed in the shelter, helping with dog obedience classes and dog transport. Over the last year she has had the opportunity to fill a variety of roles in many events, including the Spay/neuter Clinic held in October. Lorry says “It’s very rewarding to have the opportunity to be involved in different activities which all ultimately help our dogs and cats!”

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN VOLUNTEERING WITH THE GTHS?
I started volunteering with GTHS in October 2017, so just over a year ago.

WHAT KEEPS YOU COMING BACK?
Being able to have an impact on the lives of our dogs and cats, as well as being with like-minded people, both staff and volunteers, with a passion for animals.

WHAT PETS DO YOU SHARE YOUR LIFE WITH?
I have three dogs. Teddy is approximately 9 years old, Suzi is a 6 year old and Shelby is almost 4. All are Shelties and Teddy and Suzi came from GTHS.

WHERE ARE YOU FROM? WHEN DID YOU MOVE TO THE AREA?
I was born in Orangeville and raised by my aunt and uncle on their farm just south of Grand Valley. After 42 years in Brampton, raising our family, we wanted to be near the water for boating but not isolated, so purchased a small cottage in Wasaga Beach on the river and we love it!

WHICH TALENT WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO HAVE?
I wish I was craftier. I love going to craft and artisan shows and truly admire people who have those skills.

WHAT IS YOUR IDEA OF THE BEST DAY EVER?
I love it when I have all my kids and grandkids together. I have three sons, three daughters-in-law and five grandchildren with a sixth due in March.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE PASTIME (HOBBY)?
I love to read and I am happy to spend a day on my back deck with a book and a cup of tea.

DO YOU HAVE ANY PHOBIAS OR FEARS?
Not really. I’m not fond of spiders or snakes but don’t have any real phobias.

IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ANY CELEBRITY, WHO WOULD IT BE?
I am not really impressed by celebrity, so many seem to have such messed up lives. However, I would love to spend a few more hours with my Aunt Rose. She had a tremendous influence on me growing up and as an adult.

Thank you Lorry, for all you do for the GTHS!
