Compassionate Care for Every Pet: What Accessible Care Means at the GTHS

At the Georgian Triangle Humane Society we understand that one of the biggest challenges pet families face is the rising cost of animal care. That’s why in 2020, the GTHS opened its Companion Animal Hospital, offering accessible and affordable veterinary care to pets and their families, with the mission of keeping more pets and their families together.

While the GTHS is based in the South Georgian Bay area, it is one of the only accessible animal hospitals north of the Greater Toronto Area, enabling us to serve a large population of pets.

What do we mean by ‘accessible’?

We know that the cost of veterinary care can be overwhelming, and in some cases, a factor that leads pet families to make the difficult decision to surrender their pet. The GTHS aims to offer several services to support families and pets staying together, including:

  • Affordable spay/neuter services at our Animal Hospital
  • Providing financial subsidies to eligible pet families through our Emergency Medical Assistance Service program (EMAS).

While there are services available to help families manage the financial burden of urgent medical care, what many may not know is that our essential services – spay/neuter, core vaccines, and microchips – are open to everyone, regardless of financial need.

There is a misconception that accessing these services takes resources away from those who are in need of financial assistance. In fact, the opposite is true. Every appointment helps. Revenue from our Animal Hospital enables us to provide even more accessible services, creating a sustainable way to help pets stay with their families and receive the care they need.

Our Animal Hospital services aim to provide care that is free of judgment, compassionately caring for both our pets, and the people who love them.

What does the GTHS offer?

Care at the GTHS starts when a pet is as young as 4 months old, giving puppies and kittens an opportunity to have the best start. We offer services for both cats and dogs – including large dogs up to 45 kilos (100 lbs). Our hospital provides the following:

  • Spay and neuter surgeries for both dogs and cats, at an affordable price.
  • Core vaccines, including rabies, leptospirosis and kennel cough
  • Microchipping
  • Flea and tick prevention
  • Dog and cat deworming.
  • Monthly clinics for rabies and microchips can be found here.

For eligible individuals, subsidized care is available. To learn more about eligibility and requirements, please click here.

What does this mean for our community?

Caring for pets is an important part of caring for our community. By making veterinary services accessible:

  • We reduce free-roaming pet populations through spaying and neutering, easing the burden on shelters and services that are already operating above capacity.
  • We lower the risk of disease, both for pets and people, through vaccinations.
  • We preserve the human-animal bond which supports the health of our community: our physical, emotional, and social wellbeing.

Accessible and affordable veterinary care keeps pet families together. And when pet families thrive, so does our community.
